“I’m Just a Worker Around Here”
At the aluminum fence gate,
Where the horses
Are brought in and out of the paddocks,
I stand and watch her from a distance.
So beautiful she is.
So confident in her graceful movements.
Elegant she is.
So amazing she is.
A thing such as her is rare.
As she moves, her hair, black as black can be,
Dances in the breeze.
Then she turns her head and looks at me,
Just for a moment—
Just a glance.
And then she goes back to what she was doing.
I watch her for a while longer,
Then go back to fixing the gate,
(That’s why I'm around here, to fix things.)
I wonder what she thinks when she looks at me.
And just for a moment
I think of how much I love her…
But she will never be mine.
